Swimmer dives into global issues

With both issues on her plate, the 18 year old Newmarket has a busy summer ahead as she trains for two major season ending national meets where she will put her skills in the 200 butterfly, her specialty, and other events to the test.

After that, things really get interesting for the longtime member of the Newmarket Stingrays.

Among the highlights of the 11 day event is a visit to the White House ray-ban and the United Nations.

Pietrusiak, who accepted an athletic scholarship package to attend the University of Victoria in September, is no newcomer to the environmentalist scene.

In 2005, she won a contest sponsored by Canadian Geographic in which she joined 70 others students, along with 70 activists and scientists who toured Iceland, Greenland and Baffin Island to study climate change research. The trip culminated with the Youth Climate Change Conference in Victoria.

“It was really one of the first opportunities I had to experi ray-ban ence environmental change and really opened my eyes,” said Pietrusiak, who will study environmental law and geography.

Since then she has addressed, by her own count, some 3,000 students on her experiences. schools and visited several, before choosing Victoria where figures to join the No. 4 ranked Vikings.

ray-ban In the meantime, Pietrusiak is looking forward to joining a half dozen Stingrays’ teammates in Winnipeg for the senior nationals in mid July, hoping to make up for a disappointing turn of events at the Olympic trials in Montreal in April. She is in Calgary a week later for the age group national championships.

In a scary episode, she fell sick with meningitis like symptoms. She spent much of the event in bed in her hotel room.

“It was a big disappointment when I got sick,” she said. “We got there on the Sunday and by Monday night I was seized up and couldn’t move my neck. I was under the weather for a month.”

She summoned the strength to compete in her event by mid week. It was her second na ray-ban tional senior event and she admits to being intimidated. For Winnipeg, however, she expects to be more at ease.
